Udhiya, also known as Qurbani, is an Islamic ritual sacrifice of livestock, most commonly a sheep, performed during Eid Al Adha. It signifies devotion and remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God.
Udhiya is a central act of worship during Eid Al Adha, and must be performed after the Eid Al Adha prayer on the 10th of Dhu Al Hijjah, which is the first day of Eid Al Adha, falling on 6 June this year, and can continue until the sunset of the 13th of Dhu Al Hijjah, which is 8 June 2025.
In addition to sheep, goats, cows, or camels may also be sacrificed. The meat of the sacrificed animal should be divided into three equal parts: One part for the family, one part for relatives and friends, and one part for the poor and needy.
Sudan offers some of the lowest Udhiya prices in the world, with sacrificial shares costing approximately $125–$280, depending on the charity and operational conditions amid ongoing conflict and logistical challenges. Sudan falls under Group C, alongside countries such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, South Africa, and South Sudan. According to Sadagaat Charity Organization, one sacrificial share costs SDP450,000, or the equivalent of:
- The US: $125
- Canada: CAD170
- European Union: €110
- The UK: £100
- Saudi Arabia: SAR475
- Qatar: QAR460
- The UAE: AED470
- Australia: AUD180
For those unable to personally perform the sacrifice, donating Udhiya through reputable organisations ensures that the spirit of this practice is fulfilled, reaching those in need.
Sudan is currently in war, with over 24 million people facing severe food insecurity. A donation for the Udhiya of a single sheep will help feed 30 to 35 people in Sudan.
