Sudanese Journalism and Cinema Triumph at the One World Media Awards

Sudanese journalist Mohammed Amin has received the Journalist of the Year Award, and the documentary Khartoum has won the 2026 Feature Docs Award at the One World Media Awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.

The One World Media Awards recognise the best media coverage from and about the Global South, celebrating stories that break through stereotypes, change the narrative, and connect people across cultures. Each year, hundreds of entries from around the world are judged by panels of distinguished professionals carefully selected from the media and non-profit sectors.

Mohammed Amin Named Journalist of the Year

Amin was short-listed by the One World Media Awards for his relentless reporting on the war in Sudan, including his coverage of the bloody siege of Al Fasher in North Darfur. An award-winning journalist and correspondent for the Middle East Eye (MEE), a UK-based media website and channel focusing on news across the Middle East, North Africa, and the broader Muslim world, Amin specialises in geopolitics and human rights abuses in Sudan. He has worked tirelessly over the years to bear witness to the ongoing war, fighting to ensure the world pays attention.

“As a Sudanese journalist and part of the Global South, I have a responsibility to bring the voice of the Sudanese people to the media from inside the country,” Amin told One World Media.

However, Amin could not accept his award in person because he was refused a visa to travel to the UK. According to the MEE, Amin was told by the Home Office that his application for an eight-day visa had been denied because authorities claimed he did not have a “genuine reason” for visiting the UK and believed he would not leave the country afterward.

Khartoum (2025) Wins Feature Docs Award

Khartoum (2025) is a landmark feature documentary that follows five people navigating the dangerous landscape of war-torn Sudan. Their stories intertwine as they pursue dreams, face political turmoil, and fight for freedom and survival in a chaotic country:

  • Khadmallah, a single mother and tea lady, engages her daily clientele in community gossip building up to the conflict, but must desperately rescue her daughter when fighting officially breaks out.
  • Jawad, a rescue volunteer and medic who dreams of falling in love, is forced to flee to Egypt as the war claims the lives of his friends.
  • Magdi, a civil servant, finds escapism from mundane office life by racing pigeons with his son, but must defend his home as active fighting threatens to destroy everything he has lived for.

Presented by Native Voice Films & Sudan Film Factory alongside BBC Storyville, Gisa Productions, Ayin Network & XTR, Khartoum is co-directed by Sudanese filmmakers Ibrahim Ahmed (Snoopy), Anas Saeed, Timeea Ahmed, and Rawia Alhag, who were joined by British writer and director Phil Cox and Palestinian film editor Yousef Jubeh.

The film originally premiered on 27 January 2025 at the Sundance Film Festival, where it competed in the World Documentary Competition, marking Sudan’s first-ever documentary feature at the prestigious US festival. Since its premiere, Khartoum has gathered widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the Berlinale 2025 Peace Award at the 75th annual Berlin International Film Festival in February 2025, and the Bill Nemtin Award for Best Social Impact Documentary in May 2025 at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, Canada.
