Sudan Mourns Loss of Sudanese Singer Majzoub Onsa

Sudanese singer Magzoub Onsa was killed in a tragic car accident on 25 May 2026 on the road linking Atbara and Khartoum, ending the journey of one of the well-known voices in Sudanese music since the 1970s. He died at the age of 72.

Born in 1954, Onsa was famous for a singing style that combined Sudanese traditional music with modern musical arrangements, and over many years he produced a body of work that gained wide circulation inside Sudan and abroad.

Among the most prominent songs associated with the late artist is his patriotic song “Aziz Anta Ya Watani” (You Are Dear, My Homeland), which is considered one of his best-known and most beloved pieces by the public, alongside a large number of songs that cemented his position in the Sudanese music scene.

Onsah belonged to the generation of pioneers in Sudanese song, and through years of artistic contribution he produced a variety of works in his own style, maintaining his presence among Sudan’s leading singers.

The late artist released a number of widely circulated songs, including: Aqdar, Masabih al-Kalam (Lamps of Speech), Sayyad al-Nujoom (Hunter of the Stars), Wa Ma Salamuk, Akhir Khabar (Latest News), Helm al-Saba (Youthful Dream), Aziz Anta Ya Watani, and Sheli Min Khateri al-Farah (Take the Joy from My Mind).

Tributes have poured in from across Sudan’s leadership, with government officials, state entities, and members of the Transitional Sovereign Council mourning his loss.
