Sudan Mourns Al Tayeb Sayed Mekki: The Man Behind the Iconic Omdurman Sweets

Well-known businessman Al Tayeb Sayed Mekki, founder and owner of the much‑loved Al Tayeb Sayed Mekki Sweets, died on 21 March 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 92 from an undisclosed illness.

Al Tayeb Sayed Mekki Sweets has several branches across greater Khartoum State, offering sweets such as basbousa, basta and other sweets and desserts, as well as cookies and biscuits.

A well‑known figure in his hometown Omdurman and across Sudan, Al Tayeb Sayed Mekki Ismail Al‑Haj Diab was born in Wad Nubawi in 1934. He entered the traditional sweets market in the 1950s (sesame sweets, fuliyya, and tahini‑style sweets), and his confections became famous across Sudan. His business later expanded to multiple branches, mainly in Omdurman, with five leading branches in Al Mulazmeen, Omdurman Market, Al Arda, Wad Nubawi, and Khartoum. He was known for his commitment to quality and customer service, and for avoiding price increases out of consideration for the economic situation. At least three branches were reportedly bombed or damaged during the war. After the conflict in Sudan began in 2023, he — like many Sudanese business owners — opened a branch in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been based since the war began.

He has been mourned by many, including the Governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Osman Hamza, who praised his renowned generosity and his gracious, noble character. Many took to social media to mourn his loss.
