The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) is launching an emergency response for families in Tawila, North Darfur, affected by devastating flash floods that struck in August 2026, destroying homes and leaving thousands of displaced families facing another crisis.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), heavy rains and flash floods in August 2026 severely impacted North Darfur, damaging more than 1,350 homes and displacing nearly 1,000 families amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The floods destroyed shelters and food supplies, leaving families exposed to unsafe living conditions, contaminated water, hunger and increased risks of disease. With the rainy season ongoing, the need for urgent assistance continues to grow.
SAMA, together with its local partner, Alaioun (AOPDHA), is responding by providing emergency food baskets to at least 600 of the hardest-hit families in Dabanira IDP Camp in Tawila, North Darfur, whose homes were destroyed.
According to SAMA, 725 households lost their homes completely, while another 241 households were partially affected, impacting nearly 6,000 people.
The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) is a non-profit, non-political, educational and humanitarian organisation made up of medical professionals of Sudanese descent based in the US. It works to promote the health and well-being of both the Sudanese diaspora community and families living in Sudan by delivering medical services, education, training and capacity-building programmes.
In 2020, SAMA and UNICEF USA launched a strategic partnership to amplify and raise funds for UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes in Sudan. With support from SAMA’s membership and affiliated organisations such as Sudan NextGen, the efforts focused on the link between WASH initiatives and combating the spread of COVID-19.
SAMA has committed $5,000 to launch the response and still needs $25,000 to reach more families with urgent food assistance.
