Al Fasher Emergency Appeals: Urgent Call to Help Families Survive

Since 2 October 2025, over 100 civil society organisations and humanitarian actors have called for urgent protection of civilians in Al Fasher, the besieged capital of North Darfur. In the past three days alone, following the Sudanese Armed Forces’ (SAF) withdrawal from Darfur on 27 October 2025, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have killed over 2,000 civilians, mostly women and children. The army’s retreat has left more than a quarter of a million people, half of them children, defenceless and trapped under the RSF’s siege, which has been in place since May 2024.

Time is running out for an estimated 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, trapped under RSF control, where reports of atrocities, ethnic cleansing, killings, sexual violence, and deliberate starvation continue to emerge.

The RSF have been at war with the SAF since April 2023, a conflict that has displaced between 12 and 14 million people and killed more than 150,000. In August 2024, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed famine in Sudan, identifying 10 locations that had reached IPC Phase 5 — the highest level of food insecurity. Nearly half of Sudan’s population, or 24.6 million people, are facing acute hunger, with 638,000 experiencing catastrophic conditions. This means at least 20% of households face extreme food shortages, 30% of children are acutely malnourished, and two in every 10,000 people die daily from starvation or related causes.

Many humanitarian organisations across the greater Darfur region are providing vital assistance, including food, shelter, and medical care, to those who have fled Al Fasher. In response to the current crisis, several have launched emergency appeals to support the growing influx of displaced families.

Human Appeal launched an emergency appeal for Sudan to provide lifesaving healthcare, hot meals, food parcels, bread deliveries and clothes to displaced families to support their immediate needs. Their mobile clinic in Wad Medani, Al Gezira State, provides extensive medical care to displaced people, helping to secure their wellbeing in the long term. They’re providing treatment for malaria, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and disease, as well as mental health services, pregnancy care, and psychological support. They’re also providing clothing to 12,000 displaced people, vital care to children across five orphanages, as well as nutritious hot meals, bread deliveries, and food parcels to last a family a month. Their orphanage support provides lifesaving food, emergency care, and protection to the most vulnerable children affected by the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The ICRC has been present in Sudan since 1978, helping people affected by conflict in Darfur, Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Eastern Sudan and promoting international humanitarian law (IHL). Their work in Sudan, carried out independently or in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent, includes supporting hospitals and health facilities with equipment and supplies, working with local water authorities on improving people’s access to clean water and supporting the authorities who provide rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. They provide displaced people in conflict-affected areas with emergency assistance, distribute seeds and tools to farmers and vaccinate pastoralists’ livestock against diseases.

MSF’s medical teams, working in Tawila set up a health post to provide emergency care and refer patients in the most critical condition directly to the hospital. On 28 October, about 300 people were treated at the health post and 130 sent to the emergency room of the hospital, including 15 requiring lifesaving surgery. Last week, over 1,300 people fleeing El Fasher arrived by truck in Tawila on 18 and 19 October adding to the large numbers of forcibly displaced persons already in Tawila. Amongst these new arrivals, MSF screened 165 children under five years old and found that 75% were acutely malnourished, including 26% severely. Despite challenges, with your support MSF can provide lifesaving medical care to those affected by the conflict.

Since the war began in Sudan in 2023, SAMA has been working with trusted local organisations to provide aid for those impacted by the ongoing war in Sudan, especially vulnerable communities in Al Fasher and Tawila by delivering food baskets to families in Al Fasher facing extreme hunger, and supplied IV fluids and medical support to Tawila to help combat the cholera outbreak threatening lives. According to SAMA, the need is greater than ever. Families displaced from Al Fasher and across Darfur are hungry, exhausted, and uncertain of tomorrow. SAMA is raising USD10,000 to provide emergency food assistance and medicine for displaced families.

SAPA’s medical and relief teams are on the ground in Tawila, one of the few responders providing emergency medical care, food, clean water, and shelter to those escaping the atrocities in Al Fasher. With IDPs rushing in thousands, SAPA’s mobile clinics, emergency aid and central kitchens in Tawila are overwhelmed and in urgent need of your support.
