A First for Sudan: Swimmers Win 8 Gold Medals at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships

Sudanese swimmers Ziyad Saleem, Rana Hani, and Adam Ahmed won a total of eight gold medals at the Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships 2025, held from 16 to 19 October 2025 at the Kasarani Aquatic Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.

As reported by Alarabiya, the team also brought home two silver and three bronze medals. Saleem won six golds, Ahmed earned one gold and one silver, while Hani claimed one gold, one silver, and three bronzes.

Representing Sudan, a total of five Sudanese swimmers took part in the competition. Saleem, Hani, and Ahmed competed in various races. Saleem in backstroke and other events, Ahmed in freestyle, and Hani in both freestyle and butterfly races.

Saleem, Hani and Ahmed were amongst six Sudanese competitors, including two representing the Refugee Olympic Team, represented Sudan at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, which took place in Paris, France from from 26 July to 11 August 2024.

Saleem has achieved notable success in recent years, winning multiple medals at the African Championships. In 2023, he earned two golds and one silver, while in 2024, he won gold medals in the 100-m and 200-m backstroke and a silver in the 50-m backstroke — his first gold medals for Sudan in that competition. Saleem holds dual citizenship — the US and Sudan, but competes internationally for Sudan.

Hani is a rising Sudanese swimmer making waves in regional competitions. At the Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships 2025 in Nairobi, she showcased her versatility by winning one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, competing in freestyle and butterfly events. Her performance not only contributed to Sudan’s historic medal haul but also underscored her growing status as one of the country’s most promising female athletes.

Ahmed is one of Sudan’s promising young swimmers who represented the country at the Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships 2025 in Nairobi. Competing in freestyle events, he delivered an impressive performance, winning one gold and one silver medal. His success highlights the growing talent and determination within Sudan’s new generation of swimmers on the continental stage.
