Sudanese Woman Delivers Quintuplets in Omdurman

A Sudanese woman has given birth to quintuplets at Omdurman Maternity Hospital in Omdurman, Khartoum State.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, delivered three boys and two girls through a Caesarean section.

The medical team confirmed that the mother and all five newborns are in excellent health. The operation was supervised by obstetrician Dr Badr Osman, assisted by Dr Ismail Ali Mohamed, with anaesthesia consultant Dr Rehab Sayed Ahmed.

Omdurman Maternity Hospital, locally known as Al-Dayat (meaning ‘midwives’), is one of the largest and most historic maternity referral hospitals in Sudan. After being forced to close due to the ongoing conflict, parts of the facility gradually resumed operations and began receiving patients again. However, the hospital has faced significant challenges, including partial closures and the transfer of staff to nearby Saudi Hospital following a bombing incident.

The facility remains an important healthcare provider for pregnant women and newborns in Khartoum State. Efforts to restore essential obstetric and neonatal services have received support from international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Quintuplets, referring to five babies born from a single pregnancy, are a rare occurrence worldwide. Sudan has recorded several notable cases of multiple births in recent years.

In May 2026, Sudanese woman Ibtihaj Hussein gave birth to quintuplets in Khartoum after initially expecting triplets. In June 2018, another Sudanese woman delivered premature quintuplets at Omdurman Maternity Hospital, but all five babies died shortly after birth due to complications, including poor blood circulation and respiratory failure.

In January 2025, a Sudanese woman in Al Gedaref State gave birth to quintuplets at Al Taahil Hospital for Women and Obstetrics. The babies were delivered through a Caesarean section, with four reportedly surviving.

Meanwhile, in April 2026, Al Arabiya Sudan reported that at least 5.6 million babies had been born in Sudan since the outbreak of the war in April 2023. This equates to approximately three births every minute, or 180 per hour. Separately, estimates from World Data Ranking put the figure at 192 births per hour, ranking Sudan 16th globally for the highest number of births per hour.
