Mohammed Al-Amin Hamid Paediatric Hospital officially reopened and resumed full operations on 8 June 2026 in Al Shuhada, Omdurman, following a major rehabilitation and restoration project supported by Droplets of Mercy and implemented by the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), with the support of international donors and partners.
The reopening was attended by representatives from Droplets of Mercy and SAPA, as well as senior officials, including the Governor of Khartoum State. The hospital plays a critical role in the region’s healthcare infrastructure, and its reopening restores vital healthcare services to the community.
Mohammed Al-Amin Hamid Children’s Hospital is a specialised paediatric facility dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare, clinical education, and research. It delivers critical paediatric and neonatal care and aims to serve more than 500 patients a day, benefiting over 50,000 children annually across Khartoum and neighbouring states.
Established in 1986, the hospital was destroyed during the ongoing war in Sudan, which began in April 2023 and has led to the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crises. The conflict has destroyed or forced the closure of an estimated 70% to 75% of the country’s hospitals, while many of the remaining facilities continue to face severe shortages of supplies, military occupation, and repeated aerial and drone attacks.
SAPA, a US-based organisation led by Sudanese-American doctors, is actively rehabilitating, operating, and building healthcare facilities across Sudan to help address the collapse of the country’s medical sector. Its initiatives span emergency trauma care, maternity services, and paediatric wards, directly supporting more than 100 healthcare facilities nationwide. sapa-usa.org

It currently operates emergency kitchens and distributes hot meals and food packs to thousands of displaced Sudanese. dropletsofmercyusa.org/country/sudan
