South Sudanese-American supermodel Anok Yai made a striking appearance at the Met Gala 2026, held on 4 May, walking the red carpet in a powerful Black Madonna-inspired look.
Dressed in a sculpted, high-fashion black ensemble, Yai’s look drew on religious and artistic iconography, particularly the Black Madonna and the weeping statues of Sicily, with even symbolic tears incorporated into the design. The concept aimed to convey a message of hope through art. Her appearance, created in collaboration with Pierpaolo Piccioli and featuring couture elements from Ashi Studio for Balenciaga, earned her a place among the night’s best dressed by Vogue and Elle.
This year’s Met Gala celebrated the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Costume Art,” with a theme encouraging attendees to explore the idea that fashion is art through bold and imaginative interpretations. As always, the annual fundraiser brought together celebrities and designers for one of the most anticipated nights in fashion.
Yai’s Black Madonna reference draws from historic depictions of the Virgin Mary with dark skin, such as the Black Madonna of Częstochowa in Poland, revered for centuries and associated with miracles, as well as the Madonna of Montserrat, a major pilgrimage site.
A prominent figure at the Met Gala, Yai continues to be celebrated for her bold, high-fashion statements, consistently ranking among the best dressed on the red carpet. Speaking to British Vogue, she explained the deeper meaning behind her look: “In the climate that we’re living in right now, we need hope. I feel like being the Black Madonna in a Trump world is going to send that message.”
Recently, Yai revealed her battle with a congenital lung condition, for which she underwent robotic surgery. Despite these challenges, she continues to thrive at the highest level of fashion. In April 2026, she was named among the TIME 100 Most Influential People of 2026, and in December 2025, she won Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards 2025. During her acceptance speech, Yai drew attention to the ongoing crisis in Sudan, calling for peace and urging the global community not to look away. She also addressed colourism in the modelling industry, sharing a powerful message with young Black girls about self-worth and representation.
Yai is only the second Black model after Naomi Campbell to open a show for Prada, and has appeared on multiple covers of Vogue, including three for American editions.
Widely praised, Yai’s Met Gala look stood as both a fashion statement and a cultural moment, celebrating African excellence and reinforcing her place as one of the most influential figures on one of the world’s biggest fashion stages.
