Although Sudan is experiencing a degree of slow recovery in some areas, others remain under siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), while many communities continue to suffer from the wider impact of the war.
Famine conditions have expanded across the country, with cases confirmed in North Darfur and South Kordofan. Sudan now has more areas facing famine than any other country in the world.
During Ramadan, charity is considered a virtuous act and is strongly emphasised, as Muslims seek to multiply their rewards, purify their wealth and support those in need. The holy month is also the peak season for giving Sadaqah, paying Zakat Al Mal, and fulfilling the mandatory Zakat Al Fitr.
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (hajj), and the declaration of faith (shahadah) — belief in Allah and His Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). This means that Zakat is a mandatory act of worship for Muslims.
During Ramadan, there are several ways and opportunities for Muslims to give:
- Zakat Al Mal: Every sane, adult Muslim whose wealth exceeds a certain minimum amount — known as the nisab — must pay 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat Al Mal. It is a mandatory annual contribution on qualifying assets such as savings, gold, silver, and business assets that have been held for a full lunar year. The nisab threshold is typically calculated as the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver.
- Zakat Al Fitr (Fitrana): A compulsory charity with a set amount announced by the Islamic authority in each country. It must be paid by every self-supporting Muslim — including on behalf of children — before the Eid Al Fitr prayer. Its purpose is to help feed those in need and purify the fasting person.
- Sadaqah: Voluntary charity that can take many forms. During Ramadan, one of the most common acts of sadaqah is providing iftar meals or donating to initiatives that distribute meals to those fasting.
- Fidyah: A mandatory religious compensation paid by Muslims who are unable to fast due to chronic illness, old age, or other permanent reasons and therefore cannot make up the missed fasts.
- Kaffarah: A charitable compensation required when a Muslim intentionally breaks a fast during Ramadan without a valid reason. It is typically fulfilled by fasting consecutive days or feeding those in need.
With needs remaining dire, many Sudanese organisations working on the ground are accepting Zakat this Ramadan to help provide for the millions of people in need across Sudan.
Barana Hanabneiho Organisation (BHO)
Barana Hanabneiho Organisation (BHO) launched its Ramadan Al Khair campaign before the beginning of Ramadan to raise funds for its Ramadan iftar initiative. The campaign aims to raise USD35,000 to support 700 families across seven regions of Sudan, including Darfur, Gedaref, Sennar, Blue Nile and Khartoum. Through the initiative, BHO is delivering food baskets to families most in need during the holy month. Each Ramadan basket costs USD50.
Hadhreen (7adhreen)
Hadhreen, a local initiative that was established by a small group of Sudanese youth in 2015, is running a Ramadan campaign, receiving donations for the “Tables of Goodness” (Daily Iftar Meals) campaign, which will be implemented through a number of central kitchens in Khartoum State and Al Gezira State. The cost of the Iftar meal for one family (an average of five members) is:
SDP35,000 – Euro/GBP/USD10 – SAR/AED40. Additionally, within the framework of ongoing cooperation with the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), the campaign will target the Zanki Al Khodar camp in Golo locality, located in Central Darfur. The initiative will serve more than 3,500 families daily, with a total cost of USD160,000 for the entire holy month, fully covered by Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA).

Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA)
On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) is accepting Zakat, Sadaqah, and Fidyah. These contributions directly reach families in Sudan who are facing hunger, illness and displacement. Your generosity helps provide life-sustaining food assistance throughout the month of Ramadan. Together, these efforts aim to support 10,000 households, reaching approximately 50,000 people during the holy month. Additional funds will be used to rehabilitate healthcare facilities and help treat thousands of patients daily. Donations enable SAPA to deliver Ramadan food packages, provide daily warm meals through community kitchens in camps and crowded displacement sites, and support the rehabilitation of emergency services in hospitals. The initiative also helps supply mobile clinics, neonatal care services, and essential hygiene kits to vulnerable communities.
