Sudanese actress Balqees Awad passed away on 12 January 2026 at the Police Hospital in Dongola, Al Shamaliya State, at the age of 80, following a long illness.
Her death was officially announced on the same day by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA). The announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism of Khartoum State, Professor Al Tayeb Saad Al Din.

Born in Khartoum in 1946, Awad is regarded as one of the pioneers of Sudanese drama, theatre, and radio. In 1965, she became the first Sudanese woman to work as a customs officer. Earlier, in 1961, she made history as the first actress to perform in classical Arabic on Sudanese radio, securing her place as one of the most prominent female figures in Sudan’s artistic legacy.
Awad received her primary education at the Egyptian Mission Schools at the Coptic College for Girls, before going on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Khartoum (formerly University of Nilein).
Her most notable works include Aqmar Al-Dawah (Suburban Moons), Akhir Qitar (The Last Train), Sikat Al Khater (A Road to Danger), Bint Al Mudeer (The Boss’s Daughter), Qitar Al Shamal (The North Train), and Sikat Deya’a (A Lost Road).

غير انها اول سودانية مثلت بالغة العربية الفصحى في الإذاعة السودانية ومن اوئل النساء في الجمارك في الماقبل لها جانب وهو رسم الابتسامة في اي بيت سوداني إن كان عبر مسلسل الدهباية او أعمالها الاخري فما من احد وإلا في راسة موفق من برامجها الإبداعية.
