The newspaper emerged in response to widespread restrictions on freedom of expression, including the harassment and intimidation of journalists, the confiscation of newspapers, and the closure of publications.

Its mission is to foster a societal resurgence in Sudan that upholds and promotes human values, with a firm commitment to human rights and women’s rights as outlined in international charters and conventions, particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Eye Radio operates 24/7 from Juba and serves as South Sudan’s first independent news broadcaster, offering local, national, and international updates, along with sports and entertainment. Eye Radio broadcasts on 98.6 FM in Juba, with a network of repeaters extending service to major towns including Torit, Bor, Yambio, Rumbek, Aweil, Wau, and Kuajok. The radio also as a website that offers news on current affairs, entertainment, health, traffic updates, and cultural features across multiple languages.

Founded as Sudan Radio Service in 2003 by the Education Development Center (EDC) with support from USAID, it transitioned to Juba-based FM broadcasting in 2010 and was rebranded as Eye Radio in 2012. Managed through a partnership between Internews and Eye Media, Eye Radio aims to provide accurate and balanced journalism, civic education, health and market reports, as well as live coverage of major events such as peace talks and sports tournaments.

Founded in 2008 to report on the Darfur crisis, Dabanga is now an exiled media house providing coverage to all corners of Sudan via shortwave radio, satellite television, and online platforms. Dabanga has gained a widespread and diverse audience, and has a particular strength in serving marginalised and hard-to-reach communities. During the current crisis in Sudan, Dabanga is at the forefront to provide trusted news and information.

Dabanga, also written as ‘damanga’ or ‘dabunga’, is a large storage vessel, made of a mixture of clay, water and dried grass, and used by Sudanese farmers to store and preserve crops food, such as corn and grain, to keep them from spoiling. Farmers sometimes hide their money or other valuables in the bottom. It can also be found in Sudanese homes as a way to preserve food.

The Niles produces text, video, and audio feature stories about countries around the Nile Basin. The Niles has been bringing journalists together to discuss cross-border issues since 2009 and has aimed to support transboundary water cooperation in the Nile Basin since 2017.

The Niles is the Nile Basin Media Network’s main publication platform. The network is an umbrella for media professionals and organisations committed to fostering constructive narratives surrounding the Nile Basin, strengthening media capacities and networks in the region, and promoting fact-based and solution-oriented reporting and collaboration among its members. The Nile Basin Media Network was initially established with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, commissioned by the German Federal Foreign Office (AA), and is currently coordinated by Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) and partners and governed by an Annual General Meeting of members.
