Sudan Among Top 10 Countries with Most Mosques

Sudan ranks as the 10th Muslim country with the largest number of mosques, according to Globe Junk, a social media platform that creates geographical content for over 500,000 followers worldwide.

According to Globe Junk, Sudan has 78,100 mosques, making it the 10th Muslim country with the most mosques, followed by Morocco (ranked 11th) with 42,300 mosques. Iran ranks 9th with 80,200 mosques.

The top 10 Muslim countries with the highest number of mosques are: Sudan (10th) with 78,100 mosques; Iran (9th) with 80,200; Türkiye (8th) with 85,100; Egypt (7th) with 114,200; Bangladesh (6th) with 253,000; India (5th) with 300,000; Pakistan (4th) with 313,000; Saudi Arabia (3rd) with 326,000; the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2nd) with 385,000; and Indonesia (1st) with 811,000.

As a Muslim-majority country, Sudan is home to mosques across its cities and towns, from residential neighbourhoods to university campuses. Some of its most prominent and beautiful mosques include Sayyida Sanhouri Mosque, Al Nilein Mosque, Al Noor Mosque, Sheikh Abdul Rahim Al Barai Mosque, and Kathmiyah Mosque.

Sudan is a Muslim-majority country and is home to the 10th largest Muslim population in the world, with around 39 million Muslims.

Sudan also has a diverse Christian population, comprising about 5.4% of its approximately 50 million people. This community includes various denominations, primarily Coptic Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican (represented by the Episcopal Church of the Sudan). Other denominations include the Africa Inland Church, Apostolic Church, and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. As a result, the country is home to a number of churches and cathedrals – some of them historic. The Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) serves as an ecumenical body representing many of these churches.

However, Sudan has been undergoing a war since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), during which many mosques, churches, and other places of worship, including landmark and historic sites, have been destroyed.
