Fourteen people were killed and 16 others were injured in a major bus collision in Sudan on the Western Khartoum-Madani Road, near Al Hilaliya station, on 30 April 2026, the Police Press Office reported.
This tragic event is one of the most significant and fatal traffic accidents recorded in Sudan so far in 2026.
The accident occurred between Abu Usher and Wad Al Majdi when a travel bus heading south and an intercity passenger minibus traveling in the opposite direction collided head-on. While the exact number of passengers in each vehicle has not been disclosed, reports indicate that no one escaped unscathed; both drivers were among those killed in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the accident occurred after one of the vehicles suffered a steering linkage failure (drag link ball joint), causing the driver to lose control and veer into the oncoming lane.
The Highway Traffic Police of Al Gezira State (Kamlin sector) responded immediately to the scene. In coordination with the State Ministry of Health, the deceased and the injured were transported to Kamlin Hospital. Legal proceedings have since been initiated under the supervision of the Public Prosecution.
Sudan maintains one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the world. Recent data estimates 26.8 deaths per 100,000 people, with adjusted figures exceeding 36 per 100,000, ranking the country among the top 35 most dangerous globally for road travel. Fatalities often exceed 11,000 annually, driven by a combination of poor infrastructure, reckless driving, and inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws.
