Two German Researchers Launch Fundraiser to Buy Rickshaws for Sudanese Colleagues

Well-known German researcher Dr Larissa-Diana Fuhrmann and German teacher Sandra Mustafa, who lived and worked in Sudan for many years before the outbreak of war, have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to support two of their former Sudanese colleagues, Mohammed and Abdelgaleel.

The fundraiser has a goal of €2,600, and has so far raised over €1,077. Once the target is reached, the funds will be used to help Mohammed, 39, and Abdelgaleel, 47, each purchase a used rickshaw, enabling them to run a small transportation business and earn a sustainable income.

“Both have been searching for work without success and are barely able to provide for their families. This month, they were unable to pay their children’s school fees,” Fuhrmann said. “The past years have been extremely difficult for them, and all they want is financial independence and the chance to rebuild their lives.”

Mohammed is a 39-year-old father of four children aged between two weeks and eight years. He has also taken in his late sister’s four orphaned children, aged between nine and 15. Abdelgaleel is a 47-year-old father of three daughters.

Mohammed and Abdelgaleel are among the more than eight million people internally displaced by the ongoing war in Sudan, which began on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The two men were forced to flee fighting multiple times within Sudan with their families and have recently returned to their homes in Omdurman, which were looted and partially destroyed.
