Sudan and South Sudan have announced that Friday, 20 March 2026, will be the first day of Eid Al Fitr.
This was confirmed by the Transitional Sovereign Council after the Sudan Fiqh Academy performed the moon sighting on 29 Ramadan 1447 AH (18 March 2026). The Academy declared that Thursday will be the final day of Ramadan; accordingly, Friday, 20 March 2026, will be 1 Shawwal 1447 AH, marking the first day of Eid Al Fitr.
The ministry also extended warm Eid greetings to all citizens and residents, encouraging everyone to celebrate the occasion in the spirit of peace, unity, compassion, and mutual respect.
The three-day Islamic holiday will run from 20 to 22 March 2026. Both Sudan and South Sudan have officially declared public holidays in celebration of Eid Al Fitr from Friday, 20 March to Sunday, 22 March 2026. Normal work will resume on Monday, 23 March 2026.
Eid Al Fitr is a major Islamic holiday beginning on the first of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” it marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, serving as a day of thanksgiving, celebration, and spiritual renewal. Its core purpose is to celebrate the successful completion of a month of fasting (sawm), communal worship, and increased devotion. The festival is traditionally celebrated with morning prayers, special meals, new clothes, and family gatherings.
This announcement aligns Sudan with countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which have also officially declared Friday as the start of Eid. The date matches earlier predictions made on 13 March 2026 by the Sudanese Society for Astronomy and Space Sciences (SSASS).
