SAPA Issues Urgent Ramadan Appeal as Famine Expands in Sudan

Famine conditions have expanded in Sudan, with cases confirmed in North Darfur and South Kordofan, according to the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA). Sudan now has more areas facing famine than any other country in the world.

According to SAPA, more than 375,000 people are at risk of starvation. “Children are especially vulnerable. Severe acute malnutrition weakens immunity and turns treatable illnesses into life-threatening conditions. Many health facilities remain non-operational,” the association stated.

The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, released on 3 November 2025, shows that nearly half of Sudan’s population continues to face high levels of acute food insecurity. An estimated 21.2 million people are experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity (IPC Phase 3) or worse. Famine (IPC Phase 5) has been confirmed in the cities of Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, with at least 20 additional localities at risk if violence escalates or humanitarian access remains blocked. Although a slight seasonal improvement is expected during the upcoming harvest months, the number of people in IPC Phase 3 or worse (IPC 3+) is projected to remain above 19 million through early and mid-2026, according to IFPRI.

SAPA is actively providing food assistance in Khartoum, North Darfur, South Kordofan, White Nile and other affected areas. The association delivers hot meals through community kitchens in Khartoum, North Darfur and South Kordofan, as well as food baskets to displaced families in White Nile and other affected states. In 2025 alone, SAPA distributed more than 3 million meals to vulnerable families across Sudan. “For many households, these meals are their only reliable source of food,” the association said.

During Ramadan, charity, known as Sadaqah, is a virtuous act strongly emphasised in the holy month, as Muslims seek to multiply rewards, purify their wealth and support those in need. Ramadan is also the peak season for paying Zakat Al Mal (2.5 per cent of annual savings).

On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, SAPA is accepting Zakat, Sadaqah and Fidyah, a mandatory religious compensation paid by Muslims who are unable to fast due to chronic illness, old age or other permanent reasons and cannot make up the missed days. These contributions directly support emergency food distribution and nutrition assistance for families and children at risk.
