Celebrations as Sudan Reach CHAN 2024 Semi-Finals


Sudan qualified for the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 after defeating Algeria on 23 August 2025 at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The ongoing football tournament is taking place from 2 to 30 August 2025. This is the first edition to be hosted by three countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The Falcons of Jediane ejected Algeria in the last quarter final match. After playing out to a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes, Sudan’s achieved victory after scoring a 4-2 penalty shootout. The two teams continued to create several scoring opportunities including in the 30 added extra minutes after the allotted 90 minutes. Goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja was the star play after saving two penalties. It was all celebrations for the Sudan team who also topped Group D going into the knock out stage. In addition, Walieldin Khidir and Mohamed Ahmed Saeed scored confidently for Sudan in the shootout. 

The African Nations Championship is a biennial association football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), featuring national teams consisting of players currently playing in their respective local leagues. An important tournament for African football, CHAN gives homegrown players a chance to show what they can do. This eighth edition of the African Nations Championship was initially meant to take place from 1 to 28 February 2025; however, on 14 January 2025 it was postponed to August 2025.

In addition to Sudan, in the semi-finals are Madagascar, Algeria, Morocco and Senegal.

With this victory, Sudan reaches the CHAN semi-finals for the third time in history and remain unbeaten in the tournament after notable results like a 4-0 win over Nigeria and a 0-0 draw against Senegal. 

Sudan’s next challenge will be against Madagascar on 26 August 2025 in the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
