The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA), with support from the University of New Mexico ECHO Institute and in partnership with the Patients’ Helping Fund, is establishing a new learning centre in Tawila, North Darfur.
Tawila has become a critical refuge for hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the ongoing conflict in Darfur. In response to this growing humanitarian crisis, SAMA has been working alongside local organisations to deliver lifesaving assistance, including food and healthcare services, while working with international partners such as Americares to help address urgent needs.
“The Tawila Learning Center represents our commitment to moving beyond emergency relief toward sustainable, community-driven solutions. Through this initiative, we aim to train local healthcare providers, strengthen the capacity of local organisations, and equip community members with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to current challenges and build resilience for the future,” said SAMA in a statement.
Establishing this centre will also enable SAMA to deliver more effective humanitarian assistance while creating opportunities for continuous learning, collaboration, and capacity building.
This initiative builds on SAMA’s commitment to “Building the Human” in Sudan and extends our network of learning centres in Port Sudan and Khartoum to communities facing some of the country’s most urgent challenges.
In August 2026, SAMA opened a children’s community learning centre, built in partnership with popular American YouTuber, songwriter, and educator Ms. Rachel in Tawila, North Darfur. The community centre supports local families, particularly mothers and children affected by the ongoing war in Sudan, by providing a safe space for play, learning, and community support. It will also offer facilities for community gatherings, educational activities, child-focused programmes, and family support services tailored to local needs.
Based in Plano, Texas, SAPA is a non-profit organisation founded in 2019 to provide critical medical care, food supplies and shelter to the people of Sudan. Following the war in Sudan, SAPA has played a vital role in rebuilding and transforming lives. With a committed team of doctors and healthcare professionals, SAPA has tirelessly worked to enhance healthcare access, deliver medical aid, and foster community resilience. Their efforts have significantly impacted the region, bringing about positive changes and improving the lives of many in Sudan.
