Sudan has officially become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), joining an initial group of 35 founding member states.
WAICO was formally established on 31 July 2026 during a signing ceremony held at the headquarters of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. Sudan was represented by Omar Issa Ahmed, Sudan’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, who signed the founding document on behalf of the Sudanese government.
The ceremony was attended by Liu Bin, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of China. During this round of signings, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Iran, and Togo also joined as founding members, bringing the organisation’s total founding membership to 35 states.
In his remarks, Ambassador Omar Issa Ahmed thanked China for its initiative to establish the world’s first international organisation dedicated to advancing global cooperation in artificial intelligence. He reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to working with China and fellow member states to strengthen collaboration, exchange expertise and knowledge, expand training and capacity-building opportunities, and support scientific research and technological innovation. He added that these efforts would help foster fair and sustainable partnerships while advancing development, particularly across the Global South.
WAICO aims to promote international cooperation in artificial intelligence by supporting training, knowledge transfer, scientific research, and technological development, with a particular focus on countries in the Global South. The organisation also seeks to advance fair, safe, and inclusive AI governance and strengthen global digital cooperation.
