Sudan Loses 0–2 to Iraq in Group D at the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™

Sudan lost its Group D match against Iraq on Saturday, 6 December 2025, in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™, held at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.

The match kicked off at 7 pm (Doha time), ending 0-0 at halftime. However, the Iraq national team scored back-to-back goals from Mohanad Ali and Amjed Attwan in the 81st and 84th minutes, bringing the score to 2-0 by full-time.

With this win, Iraq has secured their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament, and now leads in the top spot with six points in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™ group stage. Algeria in second place with four points. Sudan in third place with one point. Bahrain sits at the bottom with no points.

Sudan fought hard against Iraq and has been impressive since defeating Lebanon on 27 November to secure its place in Group D of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™. The team then earned a hard-fought 0–0 draw against defending champions Algeria on 3 December. Sudan is now set to face Bahrain on Tuesday, 9 December at 8 pm at Education City Stadium.

Iraq is the tournament’s most decorated team with four titles (1964, 1966, 1985, 1988), while Sudan is making its fifth appearance, still in pursuit of a maiden title. Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, who took charge in September 2023 and recently extended his contract through 2028, aims to guide Sudan deep into the tournament.

Social media has been flooded with posts expressing mixed feelings about Sudan’s loss. Many have shared their disappointment, including some in tears, while others have voiced support for their national team and expressed hope that the next match against Bahrain will change Sudan’s fate in the tournament. Sudanese fans have been described as the best and largest fanbase attending the tournament.
